REEL COOL:

                                                                             The Newsletter of the

                                                                     Philadelphia Film Society

                                                                                             August 2008

Dear Friends,

Well, it’s down to just you and me.  No more film festivals (until March, that is), only the membership program and its members.  This is the “quiet time.”

But here’s the thing—I’ve never been around for “quiet time” at the Film Society.  I started this job at the tail-end of January, right as the Society was preparing for the Philadelphia Film Festival; immediately after that festival we got to work on the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.  And that just ended a few weeks ago.

So now here I am.  And the big question is “what do we do?”

After all, we’ve got all this time, and over 700 people to share it with…

Ok, since you bring it up, I’ll divulge—starting in September, the Film Society will launch a new program available exclusively to the members.  In a stroke of genius, I’m calling the new program the “Film Club,” because it will be similar to a book club… only with film.

Of course, we’ll still have our Free Preview Screenings.  And I’ll still be keeping you up to date on what’s happening around our cinematic city.  But I am hoping that many of you will find this new activity interesting, because its success is fully dependent upon your enthusiasm and participation.

Not to mention, this will be a way to add a societal aspect to our Film “Society.”

Read below for more information on the Film Club; I won’t spill all the details now, since we still have a few weeks before the program launches (and I want to let your curiosity grow), but the overall gist of the program is there.  I welcome (and encourage) any feedback you may have between now and September.

PFS Film Club

Like a Book Club… where the books read to you!

Beginning in September, the Film Society (read: I) will choose one film each month that they think you should see (or see again).

  • We will tell you that title.
  • We will offer some questions, themes, or concepts for you to bear in mind while viewing the film.
  • We will also supply a list of additional suggested viewing—films by the same writer or director, with the same stars, or dealing with similar subject matter—that may enhance your conversation with the centerpiece film.

At the end of each month, we will find a bar or like-minded social space to gather for a lively, engaging conversation about the film and topics at hand.

The following month we will choose a new film, rinse, and repeat!

Simple, right?  Wonderful?  I hope so!

Of course, you are more than welcome to find these films at any retailer of your choice, but TLA Video Stores* will be partnering with us in this endeavor, and are offering a 30% purchase discount on ALL titles showcased that month.  And don’t forget that your PFS Membership already gets you $1 off rentals at TLA Video, and that TLA has a rent-two-get-one-free deal every day of the year!

More information on this program will be made available soon; for now, all feedback is welcome at jmiller@phillyfests.com.

*This offer is good at TLA Video Stores only, not on orders made through the TLA website.

Help Support Philadelphia’s Film World!

The Philadelphia Film Society, a Non-Profit organization, relies upon the generosity of its supporters to continue to provide the exceptional year-round services its members and patrons have come to expect. While our two major film events-the Philadelphia Film Festival and the Philadelphia International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival - take less than a combined month out of any year, there are months of preparation and planning required to organize and execute such large and all-encompassing events.

In addition to the two Film Festivals, the Philadelphia Film Society also provides Free Preview Screenings year-round for its membership. PFS is also constantly building relationships with other film organizations and learning institutions in the Greater Philadelphia region, in order to provide our members with discounts and event information pertaining to the Greater Philadelphia film world.

Activities like these take time and funding, and PFS gratefully acknowledges the major role its members and donors play in keeping our organization strong.

Philadelphia Live Arts/Fringe Festival

August 29-September 13

For those of you who don’t know, the Philadelphia Live Arts/Fringe Festival is “sixteen days of bold, innovative, live performance from Philadelphia and around the world.”  Performances take place all across the city, and run the gamut from dance to spoken word, from traditional to bizarre.

The Festival is actually comprised of two different entities:

Live Arts

The Philadelphia Live Arts Festival features performances by acclaimed contemporary dance and theater companies who are selected and invited to the Festival by the Live Arts producing director. While some Live Arts artists are based in Philadelphia, many come from other parts of the U.S., and from around the world.

Philly Fringe

The Philly Fringe is the "unfiltered" festival, where new and established artists of all kinds may choose to present their own work, free of a selection process. Most Philly Fringe artists live and work in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Film Society is pleased to partner with the Philadelphia Live Arts/Fringe Festival to offer all PFS members 20% off each Festival ticket purchased online.

More Information on this discount will be mailed directly to the membership; if you are not yet a member of the Film Society, click here to learn about our exciting and engaging membership program, or to order your membership today!

Philadelphia Asian American

Film Festival

The Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival is a new festival to be held in October (specific dates and venues to be announced shortly).  Its focus is on showcasing the works of films written, directed, produced, and/or starring Asian Americans.

There are currently over a dozen Asian American Film Festivals across the nation; some of the most prominent ones (San Francisco, New York) have been operating for over 30 years!  With its quickly emerging film industry (Philly was ranked the #2 city to make a film in by Moviemaker Magazine), and one of America’s largest Asian American populations, Philadelphia stands as an ideal location for this sort of festival.

U.S. Sports Film Festival

From October 23-26, Philadelphia will host the first ever U.S. Sports Film Festival—the first and only comprehensive sports film festival in the nation.

Designed to intersect that particular place in American culture where entertainment and sporting events coincide, this new festival will be a celebration of sports films past and present.  The audience will range from traditional film festival attendees to sports enthusiasts.  There will be a combination of new and classic sports films, panel discussions, VIP parties, memorabilia, and awards ceremonies.  More importantly, this festival aims to be distinguished by its interactive participation of attendees in Festival events, often with the Festival’s films’ actors and athletes.
